My name is Susan Jacobs, daughter of shriner Richard Benker. My family has gone to shrine camp for many years. My children cut their teeth, on shrine week.My son, Aaron, had to hold a close to the top record for riding the caliope, when he was a toddler. We would ride it, to get him to fall asleep, for a nap!I helped a couple times with medical needs, and was priveleged to work with Sue Raimond, a few times, in this regard.

I recently had the opportunity to share the camp, with my co-workers for 2 separate times. In November, we came up for a campout and were surprised by a snowstorm.Being nurses and health professionals, we bucked up and had a grand time. We had a Sat. night, in the lodge hall, with a roaring fire, games, karaoke, and friendship. That night we had a massive potluck, including a turkey, 2 hams and all the trimmings. It was a great time, for all.

We came up again, last month, with a smaller group. It turned cold and frigid again, and we still had a grand time. This time we gathered at my folks mobile and everyone became close, as we shared the warmth of mom and dad's mobile, friendship, and food and drink.

Anyways, we will surely miss this place. If there is anything my comrades and I can do to help with cleanup, etc. please let me know, and I will get some helpers together. Also, we have pictures of the lodge hall and just plain FUN, and we can also gather these and share with you, if you would like. Perhaps to preserve some pics and memories for the Shrine.

Again, know that myself and many others sympathize with your loss. Perhaps adding an open forum, on your site, for people to share memories, etc. could help people deal with the loss and grief they are feeling, and help with healing. It truly feels like I lost a family. Take care and feel free to contact me, for anything I can help with, Susan Jacobs RN

My grandparents were Doug and Betty Baird. All our wonderful summer memories are from Al Bahr Shrine Camp and Shrine Week. This is a tremendous loss for our family. Their pictures were in the Mess Hall with all their friends. We were there from 1972 to 1999. I remember the heyday of the Lodge. Kids were not aloud to be in the bar area, nor on the dance floor. We sat and watched the live band and the "grown ups" dance. Kids seemed to over run it in later years, but it was still a great place for fellowship and fun. I still have my memories. :-)

Nice website. Do you have any info about the Chariot fire on Mt Laguna? My parents, Vic and Patty Muth, have a home in Al Bahr Shrine Camp, Lot 23. They have evacuated but we don't know if the camp or their home has survived. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Terri Muth Maxey

My dad (Bob Bryan) was an active Shriner that belonged to that camp. There are a lot of great memories of the functions that went on there; anywhere from weddings, to hiking trips, parades, to camping out there for the eleven days we did when they have "Shrine Week." My children grew up learning from the the other the 'Shiners' how to cook in the kitchen to learning how to keep the camp clean and free of loose debris. We spent many holidays which included Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas parties, whenever there was a function there was food, we worked hard in the kitchen and on the serving line serving food to the people who visited there. The forestry even stayed there if there were nearby fires and they were well taken care of. There are many memories for those who visited. I have many pictures of my children and grandchildren growing up there playing. It may be lost but the memories are still there and it can be rebuilt.

As Second Ceremonial Master, I take my fez off to the web master and give kudos on all the improvements to the website. From increased content to easier navigation, the website is now more useful than ever in assisting Nobles to obtain necessary event information. It also presents Al Bahr Shrine and Shriners International in our best light to Candidates for membership, namely in all the work we do for the burned and crippled children we treat for free. Please keep up the good work, webmaster Illustrious Sir Bob Powell; we appreciate your hard work and continuing commitment to the "world's greatest philanthropy." I am now 68 years old but grew up going to the Shrine Camp. My dad was an Al Bahr Shriner and I was a Job's Daughter in La Mesa. I am wondering if I would be eligible to book a cabin when I visit San Diego. Thanks for the info.

Thank you so much for helping the children. My twins were born 3 months premature. 2 beautiful little girls, 1 has speech issues and 1 has a mild cerebral palsy. The one with CP has tightness in her legs. It causes her to have an orthopedic condition. Our family came to San Diego from Hawaii last month. We have participated in Shriner's ortho clinics facilitated by the Easter Seals in Hilo, Hawaii. God Bless you sooooo much because Shriners do what nobody else does. You give the little children a chance to walk and even run, so that they can PLAY! Yes, so they can play like the other children. God bless you so much!
